F A Q – Frequently asked Questions

ARE THERE ANY SIDE EFFECTS TO FILLER TREATMENTS?

At Karen Lockett Clinics we only use biodegradable dermal fillers, these are well tolerated, with an established safety record.
In the case of the Restylane range of fillers, more than 11 million treatments have been performed since their launch in 1996; product related reactions are rare. There is of course the possibility of injection related reactions which may occur after any injectable treatment, but they typically resolve spontaneously 3-10 days after treatment. These reactions can include, but not necessarily restricted to: redness; swelling; pain; itching; bruising or tenderness at the injection site.
After lip enhancement in particular, you will experience a certain amount of swelling which typically reduces after two to three days; however there is the possibility that you may experience some swelling for up to a week.
In the case of a more pronounced reaction following any treatment, which is very rare, or if mild reactions last longer than 2 weeks, you should contact your practitioner.
Possible post treatment side effects should be discussed fully with your aesthetics practitioner, prior to treatment, during your in-depth consultation.

ARE THERE ANY SIDE EFFECTS TO BOTOX® TREATMENT?

Because Botox® is injected into the muscle through the skin, there will be tiny puncture holes, but these heal over in 2-3 hours and are usually invisible to the naked eye.
There may be very slight swelling and some redness at the injection points, but this typically settles in about 30 minutes.
Bruises, if they occur, are typically tiny and usually only at the point of injection; they will fade over a few days, can easily be covered with concealer and do not effect the treatment results.
There are some patients who have been known to suffer transient headaches, itchiness at the injection sites or tenderness, but all possible side effects will be discussed fully during your consultation.

IS BOTOX® PERMANENT?

No, Botox® is temporary, and lasts on average three to six months.

ARE DERMAL FILLERS PERMANENT?

No, the fillers we use in our clinics are not permanent, they are biodegradable and last typically 6-18 months, (dependant on which product is used, and for which indication). The duration of individual fillers will also depend on factors such as, the individual’s skin type, skin condition, lifestyle and age.

HOW LONG DO DERMAL FILLERS LAST?

To ensure an optimal and long lasting result, a top-up treatment is recommended 6-12 months after your initial dermal filler treatment. This will be discussed during consultation with your practitioner and a treatment plan formulated to include when a follow-up appointment may be appropriate.

CAN BOTOX® HELP EXCESSIVE SWEATING (HYPERHIDROSIS)?

There are two main types of hyperhidrosis; the more common type is Focal Hyperhidrosis which can affect the armpits (axillary), hands, feet or face. Generalized hyperhidrosis is less common, and affects the whole body and is usually caused by illness such as infection, diabetes or hypothyroidism.
Botox (Botulinum toxins) are excellent at treating focal hyperhidrosis, especially axillary hyperhidrosis and can provide a cessation in sweating for up to a year.

DO I NEED A SKIN TEST PRIOR TO FILLER TREATMENT?

All the fillers used in our clinics are of a biocompatible formulation, so NO allergy testing is required before treatment.

IS FILLER TREATMENT PAINFUL?

No, the fillers we use in our clinics now have an anaesthetic included for a more comfortable treatment experience; also, we frequently apply a topical anaesthetic to the skin prior to the treatments to enhance the comfort of the treatment. Issues concerning possible discomfort during treatment will be discussed during consultation.

IS BOTOX® TREATMENT PAINFUL?

No, Botox® is not a painful procedure to have done; the needles used are very fine. It may sting very slightly at the time of the injection, but this lasts only 1-2 seconds.

WHAT IF I AM TAKING MEDICATIONS?

If you are taking medication, even if they are non-prescription, please inform your practitioner. A detailed medical history will be taken at consultation, and any possible concerns discussed.

HOW QUICKLY CAN I RESUME MY NORMAL ACTIVITIES?

Most treatments carried out in our clinics have minimal or no ‘down time’ attached to them. Where there are possible exceptions to this, all aspects will be discussed at length during your consultation.
Aftercare instructions are provided for you to take away with you, where necessary.

IS BOTOX® A POISON?

The definition of a poison is: any substance that causes injury, illness or death to a living organism. Botox® along with any other brand of botulinum toxin is a highly purified preparation/medicine that is used therapeutically in ‘significantly lower’ doses than those required to elicit the effects of a ‘poison’.
